Charles Manson - family and life
Charles Manson was born to an unmarried 16-year-old named Kathleen Maddox on November 12, 1934. His father, Colonel Walker Scott, was a "con man" and Manson never knew him. Kathleen Maddox was a prostitute and would often leave Manson with various relatives or friends for days or weeks at a time. As a result, Manson had a very unstable childhood. He was frequently moved from one place to another and never had a real home.
Manson's mother eventually married William Manson, who adopted Charles. The couple had two more children together, but they divorced in 1947. Charles Manson then went to live with his aunt and uncle in West Virginia. He dropped out of school in the eighth grade and began committing petty crimes. In 1955, he was caught stealing cars and was sent to prison for 10 years.
While in prison, Manson became obsessed with the Beatles and particularly the song "Helter Skelter." He believed that the song contained hidden messages about an upcoming race war. When he was released from prison in 1967, he moved to San Francisco and gathered a group of followers known as the "Manson Family." The group included young women who were attracted to Manson's charismatic personality.
The Manson Family committed a series of murders in 1969, including the high-profile killings of actress Sharon Tate and her friends. The murders were designed to start a race war that Manson believed would occur. However, the plan backfired and Manson and his followers were arrested and convicted of murder. Manson is currently serving a life sentence in prison.
