Gore attended St. Albans School, an all-male private school in Washington, D.C., where he excelled academically and was elected to the student government. He then enrolled at Harvard University, where he majored in government and graduated with honors in 1969. After graduation, Gore enlisted in the Army and served as an information officer during the Vietnam War. He then attended Vanderbilt University Law School, where he earned his law degree in 1976.
In 1970, Gore married Mary Elizabeth Aitcheson "Tipper" Gannett, with whom he has four children: Karenna (born 1973), Kristin (born 1977), Sarah (born 1979), and Albert III (born 1982). The couple divorced in 2010 after 40 years of marriage. In 2016, Gore married his second wife, Tipper's cousin Elizabeth Keadle.
