About Carl Gustav Jung - the cornerstones of psychological types
Carl Gustav Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who founded analytical psychology. His work has been influential in the fields of psychiatry, anthropology, archaeology, literature, philosophy, and religious studies. Jung emphasized understanding the psyche through exploring the world of dreams, art, mythology, world religion and philosophy.
Jung was born in Kesswil, in the Swiss canton of Thurgau, on 26 July 1875 as the second and last child of Paul Achilles Jung (1842–1896) and Emilie Preiswerk (1848–1923). His father was a pastor in the Swiss Reformed Church. Jung's mother left a lasting impression on his life and work. As a young boy he witnessed the death of his sister and two uncles from diphtheria.
Jung was an introverted child. From childhood he showed an interest in literature, poetry, mythology and philosophy; these interests remained with him throughout his life. He read works by Goethe, Shakespeare and Schiller; the Bible; and many other bookshops. He later stated that reading Goethe's Faust was one of the most important events of his life. It led him to develop an interest in alchemy and other esoteric practices.
The Myers-Briggs Personality Test
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality test that was developed by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers. It is based on the psychological theories of Carl Jung. The MBTI is used to help people understand themselves and others better. It can be used in career counseling, team building, and conflict resolution.
The MBTI consists of four dichotomies: extraversion vs. introversion, sensing vs. intuition, thinking vs. feeling, and judging vs. perceiving. Each person has a preference for one of the two options in each dichotomy. The preferences are indicated by a letter: E for extraversion, S for sensing, T for thinking, and J for judging; or I for introversion, N for intuition, F for feeling, and P for perceiving.
People who prefer extraversion are outgoing and enjoy being around others. They are energized by social interaction and tend to be more talkative than those who prefer introversion. People who prefer introversion are more inwardly focused and tend to be more reflective than those who prefer extraversion.
People who prefer sensing are interested in the here and now and like to deal with concrete facts. They are practical and down-to-earth. People who prefer intuition are more interested in ideas and concepts than facts and details. They are imaginative and creative.
People who prefer thinking tend to make decisions based on logic and reason. They are analytical and objective. People who prefer feeling tend to make decisions based on their values and feelings. They are compassionate and empathetic.
People who prefer judging like to have things decided and organized. They like closure and dislike ambiguity. People who prefer perceiving like to keep their options open and like to go with the flow. They are flexible and adaptable
