Ted Bundy was born Theodore Robert Cowell on November 24, 1946, to Eleanor Louise Cowell (1924–2012), known for most of her life as Louise. His father's identity has never been confirmed with certainty and his birth certificate lists his father's middle name as "Mills", but his biological father's identity remained a mystery to both him and his mother. Shortly after Bundy's birth, his mother met Johnnie Culpepper Bundy (1915–1975) while working at a Seattle hospital. They married soon afterwards and Ted took his stepfather's surname.
Bundy had a troubled childhood; he was shy and withdrawn, and he exhibited bizarre behavior from an early age. His mother recalled that he would occasionally make grunting noises and had difficulties controlling his temper. biographers Stephen Michaud and Hugh Aynesworth, Bundy claimed that he committed his first murder at the age of 14, although there is no corroborating evidence for this claim.
Bundy graduated from high school in 1965 and enrolled at the University of Puget Sound, where he studied Chinese. He later transferred to the University of Washington, where he majored in psychology. He met Meg Anders during his time at the university, and they dated for a few years before breaking up in 1968.
In 1969, Bundy began seeing Karen Lee Harriman, also known as Katie Summers; they met while she was working as a secretary at the UW School of Medicine. Their relationship ended in August 1970 when Katie moved to California to attend Stanford University. The following year, Bundy met Elizabeth Kloepfer while she was working as a cocktail waitress at a Seattle tavern called The Point After; they began dating soon afterwards.

Bundy committed his first known murder in 1974, and over the next four years, he killed at least 30 women across several states. He was finally captured in 1978 and sentenced to death, but he escaped from prison twice before finally being put to death in 1989. During his time on death row, Bundy gave numerous interviews in which he detailed his horrific crimes.
