Paul Allen was born on January 21, 1953, in Seattle, Washington. His father, Kenneth Sam Allen, was a vice president of a local bank, and his mother, Faye Carol (née Gardner), was a librarian. Allen has two sisters: Jody Allen Patton and Katie Allen. He also has a brother, David Gardner Allen, who is two years younger than he is.
Allen attended Lakeside School, a private high school in Seattle where he befriended Bill Gates, two years his junior. In 1968, they used Lakeside's Teletype terminal to develop their programming skills on time-sharing computer systems. They also programmed a tic-tac-toe game that allowed users to play each other over the early ARPANET network.
After graduating from high school in 1971, Paul Allen enrolled at Washington State University but dropped out after two years to work as an assistant product manager at Honeywell in Boston. In 1974, he and Gates co-founded Microsoft Corporation in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The company relocated to Bellevue, Washington in 1979.
