When he was eight years old, his family moved to Levittown on Long Island. O'Reilly attended St. Brigid's Parochial School in Westbury, and Chaminade High School in Mineola.
After graduating from high school in 1967, O'Reilly attended Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, on a baseball scholarship. He played catcher for the college team and majored in history. He graduated with a B.A. in history in 1971. O'Reilly played semi-professional baseball while working as a high school teacher and bartender before he began his broadcasting career.
