What is an IQ Test?

What is IQ (Intelligence Quotient)?

IQ or the Intelligence Quotient is the most researched attempt to measure human intelligence and the one with the most practical applications to date.

IQ scores have been linked to educational success, job performance, and even personal income. In general, IQ is considered by many to be a reliable indicator of successful educational, occupational, economic, and social performance.

Research on IQ has shown it to be a stronger indicator of educational and occupational success than any other single score.

What is an IQ test?

IQ score comes from standardized tests developed to assess human intelligence. Several IQ tests have been developed by various researchers that aim to measure intelligence by focusing on various related skills and traits, such as verbal ability, mathematical understanding, visual ability, short-term memory, pattern recognition, analytical reasoning, and spatial orientation.

French psychologist Alfred Binet, along with psychologists Théodore Simon and Victor Henri, was the first to publish an IQ test (Binet-Simon test) in 1905. It was designed to measure a child's intelligence and compare it to what their intelligence 'should' be, based on the child's actual age.

Since then, a variety of individually administered IQ tests have been developed and continually updated. Intelligence researchers have found IQ tests to be among the most accurate psychological tests and assessments.

What do IQ tests measure?

IQ tests do not attempt to measure a person's general level of knowledge, but rather their actual ability to learn. The final IQ score can be an indicator of how capable an individual is at solving complex problems of (mostly) analytical nature.

However, it can be said that IQ tests can only measure a certain part of human intelligence, namely the one related to logic and analytical thinking. There are aspects of human intelligence such as creativity or emotional intelligence that cannot be measured by an IQ test.

Our certified IQ test measures five different aspects of human intelligence: visual perception, abstract thinking, pattern recognition, spatial orientation & analytical thinking.

How can you test your IQ?

The IQ test consists of a series of questions designed to measure different areas of intelligence, such as visual perception, abstract thinking, pattern recognition, analytical thinking, and spatial orientation. After you answer the IQ test questions, your results are compared to those of people your age, and then a normalized score is determined.

Normalize means that the average IQ score is 100. Your score shows where you stand compared to other peers in your age group who have taken the test. How far you fall on either side of the average IQ score determines approximately how unusual your IQ is.

IQ scores follow a normal statistical distribution. About 95% of the world's population have scores within two standard deviations (SD) of the mean (average IQ score).

If an SD is 15 points, as is common in almost all modern tests, then 95% of the population is in the range 70-130, and 98% is below 131. Alternatively, two-thirds of the population has IQ scores within an SD of the mean, i.e., in the range 85-115.

Where can I take an IQ test?

The IQ test is a psychological test that measures a person's intelligence. It is often used by schools, universities and employers to assess the abilities of job applicants. There are several types of IQ tests, but the most commonly used is the Stanford-Binet IQ test. This test consists of verbal and nonverbal tasks that measure the person's cognitive abilities.

In the past, an IQ test could only be administered by certain agencies and involved high costs. Nowadays, there is the possibility to use an online IQ test, like ours, and to determine one's IQ within a very short time.

Can IQ increase?

Recent research has shown that a person's IQ score can change significantly, and there is strong evidence that both life and learning experiences can have an impact on the brain and IQ.

Many studies suggest that cognitive training can increase intelligence, and it is possible that we are constantly improving the cognitive skills we choose to work on. The human brain is equated by many to a muscle that is strengthened through exercise. Recent neuro research has also confirmed the brain's plasticity and demonstrated its ability to form new synapses.

Our certified IQ test can help you discover your mental strengths and weaknesses and identify areas you need to work on to improve your score!
