He attended Lakeside School, a private school in Seattle where he met Bill Gates. The two quickly became friends and spent a lot of time together working on various computer projects. When Gates went to Harvard University, Allen followed him a year later. However, after two years at Harvard, Allen dropped out to work with Gates on what would become Microsoft.
Allen was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1982 and underwent treatment that successfully halted the progress of the disease. He continued to work at Microsoft during his treatment and even co-wrote a bestselling book about his experience called Idea Man: A Memoir by the Cofounder of Microsoft.
