Bush began his political career in 1978, when he ran for the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas's 19th congressional district. He lost the election, but won a seat in the House two years later. In 1988, he ran for the U.S. Senate, but lost to Democrat Lloyd Bentsen. In 1994, he ran for governor of Texas and defeated Democrat Ann Richards. He was reelected in 1998 with 71% of the vote.
