He graduated from Harvard-Westlake School in North Hollywood in 1995 and then studied computer science at Brown University. After graduation, Oka worked for Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) on visual effects for Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999) and Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002).
