When she was three years old, her parents divorced and she went to live with her mother full-time. Brandy remarried in 1969 to an actor named Victor Lowe; the couple had two sons together before divorcing in the early 1970s.

Foster began her acting career at the age of nine, appearing in a number of television shows and commercials. She made her film debut in the 1976 film Taxi Driver, for which she received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She subsequently starred in a number of successful films, including Freaky Friday (1976), The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (1976), Candleshoe (1977), Foxes (1980), and Carny (1980).
In the 1980s, Foster established herself as a leading actress with roles in such films as Mimic (1997), Contact (1997), Anna and the King (1999), and Panic Room (2002).
