Sarah Palin was born in Sandpoint, Idaho, on February 11, 1964, the third of four children (and first daughter) of Sarah "Sally" Heath (née Sheeran), a school secretary, and Charles R. "Chuck" Heath, a science teacher and track coach. Palin's siblings are Chuck Jr., Heather, and Molly. She is of English, Irish, and German descent. When Palin was two years old, the family moved to Skagway, Alaska, where her father received his teaching job. They eventually settled in Wasilla, Alaska. In Wasilla High School, she was captain of the basketball team that won the 1982 state championship; she also helped her father coach junior high basketball when he became ill with multiple sclerosis.
Palin met her future husband Todd while he was working as a commercial fisherman in Valdez; they married in 1987. The couple have five children: Track (born 1989), Bristol (1990), Willow (1994), Piper (2001), and Trig (2008). Her first political experience came as a member of the Wasilla City Council, on which she served from 1992 to 1996. She ran for Mayor of Wasilla in 1996 and won, defeating incumbent mayor John Stein. As mayor, Palin oversaw the construction of a new high school, Wasilla High School. She also championed an initiative to curb domestic violence, which resulted in Wasilla having one of the lowest rates of domestic violence in the state. Palin resigned as mayor in 2002, after being elected to serve as Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. In this role, she was responsible for overseeing the state's oil and gas industry and working to prevent waste and corruption within it.
