Born in South Orange, New Jersey, Kevin Spacey Fowler was the youngest of three children. His father, Thomas Geoffrey Fowler, was a technical writer and data consultant, and his mother, Kathleen Ann (née Knutson), was a secretary. He has two older siblings, Randy and Julie. Spacey attended Northridge Military Academy, Canoga Park High School, and then Chatsworth High School in Los Angeles.
Spacey's parents divorced in 1972 when he was 13 years old. His mother subsequently married Jack Willis, a car salesman; the marriage lasted 18 months. Spacey's grandfather was a Swedish immigrant who changed the family surname from "Fowler" to "Spacey". After high school, Spacey studied at the Juilliard School in New York City. He dropped out of Juilliard after two years to pursue an acting career in Hollywood.
